Malanad Vanilla Small Farmers Association

The Malanad region geographically forms part of the Western Ghats mountain range in South India. Farming is the communities’ main source of income with the principal crop being Areca, a type of nut historically used for religious purposes. Vanilla is usually cultivated as an inter-crop, but due to market demands for natural and organic vanilla, this spice has proved more beneficial to farmers. Formed in 2006, the cooperative now focuses on vanilla and has since created and implemented various social programs improving the welfare of members and the community.

The Malanad Vanilla Farmers Association has formed a strong relationship with the Eco Agri Research Foundation which acts as the organization’s partner for processing, trading and marketing services. The primary goals Malanad and the Eco Agri Research Foundation are to find a steady and reliable market system that will comprehensively contribute to their communities. Together, they are exploring new markets and other products like pepper, cashew and cocoa. Cooperative leaders are incredibly visionary and instrumental in steering social and environmental projects at their own cost.
